DARREL LONG
February 28,1941 – February 27, 2010
Darrel was born in Kamloops on February 28th, 1941…A date (not year) that he shared with his wife Rachel and sister-in-law Bridget.
After a short, courageous battle with liver cancer, Darrel passed away peacefully at
home with his loving family by his side.
He was predeceased by his parents George and Elsie Long, his brother Clair and more
recently by his beloved Aunt Estelle in Victoria.
Darrel is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Rae, his son Michael (May), daughters Linda and Heather (Matt) and his much loved young grandchildren Kaitlyn & Sophie Long and Ainsley & Nathan Light.
Darel was the son of a pioneering lumbering family in Kamloops. The Long boys started
Kamloops Lumber, Nicola Valley Sawmills and the Monte Lake Sawmill. He had a very
strong work ethic, working beside his father George at Long and Son Lumber on
Shumway Lake. Darrel hauled logs and lumber in his beloved Kenworth truck and as a
youngster helped deliver and shovel sawdust to 300 customers. For several years he
figure skated (and played hockey) knowing that when he left the Memorial Arena his
father would be waiting outside in “Old Speedy” to deliver and shovel more sawdust!
He also worked in the bush at Balco Forest Products. He loved the freedom of the outdoors in the bush with it’s beauty, nature, and quietness. He finished his working career at the Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill as part of the yard crew. He loved his garden (especially the tomatoes), washing his vehicles every weekend, mowing the lawn meticulously, tinkering in his workshop, and attending Blazers games.
His family and little “Skittlefritzes” will miss him dearly.
A Celebration of Darrel’s life will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, March 5, 2010 in St. Paul’s Cathedral, 360 Nicola St., with Dean Louise Peters officiating.
Donations in memory of Darrel may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 111-450 Lansdowne St., Kamloops BC V2C 1Y3 or to the Kamloops S.P.C.A., 1211-8th St., Kamloops BC V2B 2Y3.
